Despite its simple, sweet melody and lyrics, “You Are My Sunshine” encompasses fifty years of country music history and four decades of Louisiana politics. At the center of this story is Jimmie Davis, who capitalized on his country music stardom to win two terms as Louisiana’s governor.
Join us for a lively presentation by Robert Mann, author of a new biography about a tune that’s as enduring as sunshine itself. You’ll learn about the song’s contested origins, rise to legendary status, and impact on the American civil rights movement. A refreshing summer lunch will also be served.
