Celebrating 250 Years of the Duplantier Oak at St. James Place

At the heart of St. James Place Retirement Community stands a living piece of Louisiana history – the Duplantier Oak. Known to the Live Oak Society of Louisiana as Tree Number 986, this magnificent live oak is estimated to have been growing since 1776 – during the same era as the founding of the United States. In 2026, we proudly celebrate 250 years of strength, beauty, and history rooted right here on our campus.

Long before modern-day Baton Rouge developed into the vibrant capital city we know today, the Duplantier Oak was already stretching its branches toward the Louisiana sky. Over the centuries, it has quietly witnessed generations of change – serving as a steady and enduring presence on land that was once part of the historic Duplantier Plantation.

The tree takes its name from Clara Daigre Duplantier, whose family owned the property until 1850. Today, the oak remains a living link to Baton Rouge’s early history and an important part of the story of St. James Place.

A Registered Louisiana Treasure

The Duplantier Oak was officially registered with the Live Oak Society in 1983, becoming Old Number 986 in the society’s renowned registry of historic live oak trees. The organization celebrates these extraordinary trees for their longevity, cultural significance, and the beauty they bring to communities throughout Louisiana and beyond.

Live oaks are known for their resilience, but the Duplantier Oak stands out even among these iconic Southern trees. Its sprawling canopy and graceful, low-hanging limbs create a striking silhouette that has become instantly recognizable to residents, visitors, and team members.

In 2022, the tree received an updated official measurement by Bob’s Tree Preservation, recording an impressive circumference of 21 feet, 2 inches. This measurement further confirms what many already know: the Duplantier Oak is truly a giant among Louisiana’s historic trees.

A Symbol of St. James Place

Beyond its remarkable age and size, the Duplantier Oak holds special meaning for the St. James Place community, which was thoughtfully built around this historic tree.

For residents, the Duplantier Oak is more than a historic landmark – it is a centerpiece of the St. James Place campus. Each day, residents pass along the walkway next to it, taking in the beauty of its sweeping branches and massive trunk. Its presence adds a sense of continuity and calm, quietly connecting daily life at St. James Place with the deep history rooted in this remarkable tree.

In fact, the significance of this majestic oak is so deeply woven into our community that its image serves as the official logo of St. James Place. The tree symbolizes many of the same qualities that define our community: strength, longevity, deep roots, and a legacy that grows stronger over time.

The Legacy of Louisiana’s Live Oaks

Live oaks hold a special place in Louisiana culture. Their sweeping branches and enduring presence have long symbolized the spirit of the South.

For generations, these trees have provided shade, inspiration, and a sense of place across the region. The Duplantier Oak continues that tradition here at St. James Place.

Celebrating 250 Years

As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Duplantier Oak, we are reminded that some of the most meaningful things in life take time to grow – community, tradition, and lasting connections.

From its beginnings as a small sapling in the late 18th century to its place today as a beloved symbol of St. James Place, the Duplantier Oak continues to stand tall.

Its roots run deep in Louisiana soil, just as the St. James Place community is rooted in a tradition of care, connection, and vibrant living.

Happy 250th Birthday to the Duplantier Oak – our historic landmark, our symbol, and our old friend.
